Yellow Tang Fish (Captive-Bred) Fish
Yellow Tang – Zebrasoma flavescens | Live Saltwater Fish | coralSLover®
The Yellow Tang is one of the most iconic and instantly recognizable saltwater fish in the marine aquarium hobby. With its bright vivid lemon-yellow coloration, oval-shaped body, and constant active swimming behavior, Zebrasoma flavescens adds movement, contrast, and unmistakable vibrancy to any reef or fish-only system.
In the wild, Yellow Tangs inhabit a wide range across the Central and Western Pacific, with the highest populations found around Hawaii, extending into the Marshall Islands, Micronesia, and the Philippines. Known by many names — including Citrus Tang, Yellow Sailfin Tang, and Yellow Surgeonfish — this species has become a beloved staple of marine aquaria worldwide.
Care & Aquarium Requirements
Minimum Tank Size: 100+ gallons
Temperament: Semi-aggressive (territorial toward other tangs)
Reef Safe: Yes
Activity Level: Constant, active swimmer
To thrive, the Yellow Tang requires a clean, well-filtered, and oxygen-rich aquarium with strong water flow. Provide substantial live rock for grazing and hiding, while maintaining ample open areas for continuous swimming. In smaller or tightly aquascaped tanks, territorial aggression toward other tangs or similarly shaped fish may increase.
Only one Yellow Tang per aquarium is recommended unless multiple specimens are introduced simultaneously into an extra-large system.
Diet
While they readily accept meaty foods, their long-term health depends heavily on marine-based algae and seaweed to support their digestive system and immune strength.
Recommended diet:
Nori sheets / seaweed (Sea Veggies, Seaweed Salad, Ocean Nutrition)
Spirulina herbivore pellets
High-quality algae-based flakes
Occasional mysis or brine as supplemental protein
Daily or frequent access to grazeable algae will help reduce stress and aggression.
Why Choose a Yellow Tang
Iconic, bright-yellow coloration
Hardy, active, and engaging swimmer
Excellent natural algae grazer
Reef-safe and compatible with most fish
Adds unmatched visual brightness to marine displays
Great For
Large reef aquariums (100+ gallons)
Aquarists seeking a classic, vibrant show fish
Systems needing an herbivorous algae grazer
Mixed reefs and fish-only-with-live-rock tanks
