Mimic Yellow Tang Fish
Yellow Mimic Tang – Acanthurus pyroferus | Live Saltwater Fish | coralSLover®
The Yellow Mimic Tang (Acanthurus pyroferus) is one of the most fascinating tang species due to its remarkable ability to mimic pygmy angelfish (Centropyge spp.) during its juvenile phase. While young, this tang displays bright yellow coloration and fin shapes nearly identical to surrounding dwarf angels-an evolutionary adaptation that provides protection from predators. As it matures, the fish transitions into its true adult pattern, adopting deeper earth tones and the characteristic tang body shape.
Found throughout the Western Pacific Ocean, the Yellow Mimic Tang inhabits lagoon and seaward reef slopes from 13–197 ft., living among coral and rock where it grazes constantly on algae, zooplankton, and reef detritus.
A hardy and visually engaging species, the Mimic Tang is a great choice for medium to large reef aquariums-provided it has plenty of swimming space and a consistent supply of marine-based algae.
