Mimic Half Black Tang Fish
Mimic Half Black Tang – Acanthurus chronixis | Live Saltwater Fish | coralSLover®
The Mimic Half Black Tang (Acanthurus chronixis), also known as the Mimic Surgeonfish, is a peaceful and reef-safe tang prized for its unique juvenile coloration. When young, it closely resembles the Half Black Dwarf Angelfish—a natural mimicry strategy that helps avoid predation in the wild. As it matures, the fish transitions into its adult coloration while maintaining a compact, manageable size for medium to large reef systems.
In the wild, this species spends most of its day actively grazing on filamentous algae, making it a functional and beautiful addition to reef aquariums. They are excellent algae controllers and adapt well to captive diets, readily accepting flakes, pellets, and frozen foods.
Tank Requirements & Temperament
Minimum Tank Size: 125+ gallons
Temperament: Peaceful; generally tolerant of tankmates
Reef Safe: Yes
Swimming Needs: High; prefers strong flow and rockwork to graze
Care Level: Moderate
Provide ample live rock, strong water movement, and open swimming space. These tangs do not outgrow their environment quickly, making them suitable for a wide range of saltwater aquariums.
Diet
Primary Diet: Herbivore
Although they consume meaty foods with other fish, the Mimic Half Black Tang thrives when fed a marine algae–based diet:
Nori / dried seaweed
Marine algae sheets
Spirulina herbivore pellets
Macroalgae from refugiums
Feeding 3× weekly with dried seaweed helps:
Support immune function
Reduce stress and aggression
Maintain long-term health
Improve coloration
Recommended foods: Sea Veggies, Seaweed Salad, Seaweed Selects.
Great For
Medium → Large reef systems
Peaceful community setups
Tanks needing strong algae-grazing fish
Hobbyists wanting a tang that remains manageable in size
