Mimic Pyroferus Tang (Surgeonfish) Fish
Mimic Pyroferus Tang – Acanthurus pyroferus | Live Saltwater Surgeonfish | coralSLover®
The Mimic Pyroferus Tang (Acanthurus pyroferus) is a uniquely patterned surgeonfish recognized for its juvenile mimicry and striking adult coloration. Adults develop a yellowish-brown body accented by a white band around the mouth, a bold orange-to-black ring around the eye, and a dark vertical band running from the chin to the top of the gill cover. A bright orange patch at the pectoral fin base and a yellow-edged caudal fin complete the distinctive appearance of this species.
In the wild, this tang inhabits offshore reefs across northern Western Australia, the Timor Sea, the northern Great Barrier Reef, the Coral Sea, Moreton Bay (Queensland), and extends south as juveniles to Montague Island (NSW). It is also found around Cocos (Keeling) Islands, Christmas Island, and throughout the tropical West-Central Pacific.
Like other members of the Acanthurus genus, the Mimic Pyroferus Tang is an active grazer that plays an important ecological role on reefs. In nature, it feeds primarily on detritus, sediment, and microalgae, constantly picking at the substrate to remove organic material.
Care Requirements
Care Level: Moderate
Temperament: Semi-aggressive, especially toward similar tangs
Reef Safe: Yes
Minimum Tank Size: 70+ gallons
Adult Size: ~7.5 inches
Diet: Herbivore / Detritivore (algae, detritus, marine-based greens)
Diet & Feeding
The Mimic Pyroferus Tang thrives on a varied herbivore diet:
Marine-based algae & nori sheets
Spirulina pellets
Algae-rich flakes
Occasional mysis or enriched brine
Natural grazing on live rock
A diet rich in algae improves immunity, reduces aggression, and keeps coloration vibrant.
Behavior & Compatibility
Generally peaceful with non-tang species
Can be aggressive toward other surgeonfish, especially Acanthurus
Best kept as the only tang unless housed in a very large aquarium
Excellent for reef systems due to strong grazing behavior
Great For
Medium–large reef aquariums
Tanks needing a natural detritus & algae grazer
Hobbyists who appreciate unique coloration & juvenile mimicry behavior
