Powder Blue Tang
Powder Blue Tang – Acanthurus leucosternon | Powder Blue Surgeonfish
The Powder Blue Tang (Acanthurus leucosternon) is one of the most visually striking surgeonfish in the marine aquarium hobby. Known for its vivid coloration and bold contrast, this species displays an oval, streamlined body with a brilliant sky-blue base, a pure white chest, and a bright yellow dorsal saddle that runs from head to tail. The pectoral fins feature yellow highlights, while deep blue-black facial and tail markings complete its dramatic appearance.
Native to the Indian Ocean and Maldives, the Powder Blue Tang is an active, powerful swimmer that requires ample space and pristine water conditions to thrive.
Tank Requirements & Behavior
Because of its activity level and territorial nature, the Powder Blue Tang requires a minimum tank size of 125 gallons, with long, open swimming zones and well-structured rockwork.
Temperament:
Known for being highly aggressive toward other Tangs and Surgeonfish
Especially hostile toward species with a similar body shape or coloration
Best kept as the only Tang unless housed in a very large, advanced reef system
If keeping multiples, introduce all specimens at the same time into a large tank to reduce territorial disputes
Diet & Nutrition
While Powder Blue Tangs will accept meaty foods offered to other fish, their long-term health depends on a nutrient-rich herbivore diet.
Feed These Regularly:
Marine-based algae
Dried seaweed (nori) on a rock or veggie clip
Sea Veggies, Seaweed Salad, Ocean Nutrition algae products
Feed algae-based foods at least 3 times weekly to:
Strengthen the immune system
Reduce aggression
Support long-term health and coloration
Supplement with:
Spirulina
Herbivore pellets
High-quality frozen mixes
Care Level & Health Information:
The Powder Blue Tang is best suited for intermediate to advanced marine aquarists due to its sensitivity to:
Marine Ich (Cryptocaryon)
Lateral Line Erosion (HLLE)
Parasites and stress-related conditions
Stable water parameters, strong oxygenation, and consistent feeding greatly improve long-term success.
Great For:
Large reef tanks with open swimming room
Experienced marine hobbyists
Display aquariums seeking a high-impact, vibrant show fish
Systems with strong nutrient control and excellent water quality
