Naso Vlamingii Tang Fish
Vlamingii Tang – Vlaming’s Unicornfish / Bignose Unicornfish | Live Saltwater Fish | coralSLover®
The Vlamingii Tang (Naso vlamingii), also called the Vlaming’s Unicornfish or Bignose Unicornfish, is one of the most impressive large tang species in the marine hobby. Adults develop a deep brown-to-purple body, accented with electric blue facial markings, blue-edged fins, and bold vertical body stripes. Juveniles display a lighter coloration along the dorsal surface and darker tones ventrally, gradually transitioning into their rich adult pattern as they mature.
The Vlamingii Tang is known for its active swimming behavior and substantial adult size. Because this species can reach up to 24 inches, it requires a very large aquarium—360 gallons or larger, with ample swimming space and rock structures for shelter. A tight-fitting lid or canopy is essential, as this fish may jump when startled.
Though aggressive toward other tangs and surgeonfish, the Vlamingii Tang is typically peaceful with most non-tang tankmates and is fully reef safe, posing no danger to corals or sessile invertebrates.
Care Requirements
Care Level: Moderate
Temperament: Aggressive toward other tangs; peaceful with most fish
Reef Safe: Yes
Minimum Tank Size: 360+ gallons
Adult Size: Up to 24"

Appearance
Deep brown–purple body as adults
Vertical body markings and shimmering blue highlights

Long-term color intensity
Recommended foods: Sea Veggies, Seaweed Salad, Ocean Nutrition.
Behavior & Compatibility
Aggressive toward other tangs, especially large or similar-shaped species
Peaceful with most community fish
Reef-safe: does not harm corals or invertebrates
Best kept as the only tang in large aquariums unless the tank is extremely large (600+ gallons)
