Convict Tang Fish
Convict Tang – Convict Surgeonfish (Acanthurus triostegus) | Live Saltwater Fish | coralSLover®
The Convict Tang, also known as the Convict Surgeonfish, is a peaceful, active grazer recognized by its silver-white body marked with six bold black vertical bars. This striking contrast gives the species its “convict” appearance and makes it a standout algae grazer for reef and fish-only systems. Unlike many other surgeonfish, the Convict Tang has smaller peduncle spines, making it less aggressive and generally more community-friendly.
In larger aquariums, these tangs exhibit constant movement as they forage throughout the day, helping control nuisance algae and contributing to a healthier ecosystem.
Tank Requirements & Temperament
Minimum Tank Size: 125+ gallons
Temperament: Peaceful to semi-aggressive
Reef Safe: Yes
Swimming Space: Very high
Care Level: Moderate
Convict Tangs should not be housed with other tang species, especially Acanthurus, due to potential bullying. However, they can coexist peacefully in groups if all individuals are added to the tank at the same time.
Sexual dimorphism is minimal—males and females appear similar. Captive breeding is extremely difficult, as fry remain planktonic for extended periods and are vulnerable to filtration.
Diet
Primary Diet: Herbivore
Although they will eat meaty foods, Convict Tangs require frequent marine-based algae and seaweed to maintain health and color.
Feed at least 3× per week:
Dried seaweed (nori)
Spirulina herbivore pellets
Macroalgae
Algae sheets on veggie clips
Consistent algae feeding helps:
Strengthen their immune system
Reduce territorial behavior
Support long-term health and color vibrancy
Recommended: Sea Veggies, Seaweed Salad, Ocean Nutrition.
Great For
Large reef aquariums needing an active algae grazer
Peaceful community tanks
Hobbyists wanting a tang that thrives in groups (when introduced together)
Systems needing constant motion and natural grazing behavior
