Sailfin Tang Fish
Sailfin Tang – Live Saltwater Fish | Pacific Sailfin Tang (Zebrasoma veliferum) | coralSLover®
The Sailfin Tang, also known as the Pacific Sailfin Tang, is one of the most striking and recognizable surgeonfish in the marine hobby. Its tall, oval-shaped body showcases bold vertical yellow stripes, intricate patterning between each band, and a beautifully colored tail transitioning from bright yellow to cool blue highlights. Light freckles on the snout and detailed facial markings add to its refined appearance.
One of the most impressive features of the Sailfin Tang is its ability to dramatically expand its profile by raising its large dorsal and anal fins, giving it a majestic, sail-like silhouette that stands out in any reef display.
Tank Requirements & Temperament
Minimum Tank Size: 180+ gallons
Temperament: Semi-aggressive toward same-species and similar-shaped tangs
Reef Safe: Yes
Swimming Needs: High; requires long open swimming space
Care Level: Moderate
The Sailfin Tang is generally peaceful toward non-conspecific tankmates but can show territorial behavior toward other tangs. If you plan to keep multiple tangs, introduce them simultaneously into a large system.
Diet
Primary Diet: Herbivore
While they will eat meaty foods with the rest of the aquarium, Sailfin Tangs require frequent feedings of marine-based algae and seaweed for optimal color, health, and temperament.
Feed at least 3× per week:
Nori sheets (green, red, brown)
Marine macroalgae
Spirulina-based pellets
Herbivore flakes
This diet helps:
Strengthen immune function
Reduce aggression
Maintain proper weight and growth
Enhance coloration
Recommended products: Sea Veggies, Seaweed Salad, Ocean Nutrition.
Great For
Large reef and FOWLR systems
Tanks needing strong algae control
Hobbyists wanting a centerpiece tang with iconic coloration
Experienced keepers with 180+ gallon aquariums
