Firefish Goby – Includes Fish Pack

from $124.95

Firefish Goby (Nemateleotris magnifica)

The Firefish Goby is one of the most popular and recognizable marine fish in the reef aquarium hobby. Valued for its striking coloration, elegant body shape, and gentle personality, this species is an excellent choice for both beginner and experienced reef keepers.

Also commonly known as the Fire Goby, Magnificent Firefish, or Fire Dartfish, Nemateleotris magnifica features a bright yellow head that fades into a white anterior body, transitioning into a vivid pinkish-orange to red posterior. Its dorsal, anterior, and caudal fins are accented with subtle black highlights, giving the fish a refined and eye-catching appearance.

Despite its delicate look, the Firefish Goby has a bold personality. It is peaceful, observant, and graceful in movement, often hovering above rockwork in the water column, just as it does in the wild. In natural reef environments, Firefish are commonly seen in loose groups, feeding on drifting plankton near reef slopes.

In the home aquarium, the Firefish Goby is known to be shy and relies on secure hiding places. It instinctively retreats into rock crevices or small caves when startled, so a well-structured aquascape with plenty of rocky outcrops is essential. While generally non-aggressive, Firefish may show territorial behavior toward others of the same species unless kept as a bonded pair.

Due to its small size and peaceful nature, the Firefish Goby is ideal for nano reefs and smaller systems, though it will also thrive in larger aquariums. A minimum tank size of 20 gallons is recommended, with moderate lighting and gentle to moderate water flow moving through the rockwork.

It is important to note that Firefish are known jumpers, especially when stressed. Aquariums should always be fitted with a secure lid or mesh cover to prevent escape.

Diet & Feeding

The Firefish Goby is a planktivore and adapts well to captive diets. It should be fed a varied menu including:

  • Vitamin-enriched brine shrimp (live or frozen)

  • Mysis shrimp

  • High-quality prepared marine foods

  • Natural zooplankton present in a mature reef system

With proper care, a calm environment, and secure hiding spots, the Firefish Goby becomes a hardy, engaging, and beautiful addition to any reef aquarium.
