Bubble Cat Eye Live Aquaculture LPS Coral
Bubble Cat Eye – Live Aquaculture LPS Coral | coralSLover®
Classification: Premium Large Polyp Stony (LPS) Coral
Scientific Name: Plerogyra sinuosa
Common Name: Bubble Cat Eye, Bubble Coral
The Bubble Cat Eye is a stunning aquacultured morph of Plerogyra sinuosa, celebrated for its distinctive glowing “cat-eye” centers embedded within each translucent bubble. This coral displays large, water-filled vesicles that shimmer in soft shades of jade green, mint, and icy teal, each bubble exhibiting a bright, elliptical “eye” pattern that glows intensely under actinic or blue LED lighting.
During the day, the bubbles inflate into large, smooth ovals that completely hide the skeleton beneath, creating a soft, balloon-like surface. At night, the bubbles retract and delicate feeding tentacles extend outward, revealing its predatory side and adding dramatic nighttime movement to the reef.
The Bubble Cat Eye morph is renowned for its elegant, otherworldly aesthetics — a blend of translucent pearls and glowing eyes — making it a powerful visual centerpiece in any LPS-dominated display.
Scientific & Biological Information
Genus: Plerogyra
Species: Plerogyra sinuosa
Family: Euphylliidae
Growth Form: Phaceloid or wall-form, with large balloon-like vesicles (bubbles)
Symbiosis: Hosts Symbiodiniaceae (zooxanthellae) for photosynthesis
Behavior: Bubbles expand during the day; feeding tentacles extend at night
Defense: Sweeper tentacles can extend 2–3 inches
Coloration Specific to the Bubble Cat Eye Morph
Translucent cat-eye bubbles with a glowing neon center
Radiant mint/teal or pale green vesicles
Soft lavender or bluish undertones depending on lighting
High fluorescence under actinic light
Care & Placement Bubble
Lighting: Moderate; too much direct light can deflate bubbles
Flow: Low to moderate, indirect flow to maintain bubble inflation
Placement: Lower to mid section of the aquarium; give 4–6 inches of space from other corals
Feeding: Thrives with supplemental mysis shrimp, zooplankton, or marine snow
The Bubble Cat Eye forms domed colonies with gently swaying vesicles that catch ambient current, creating a peaceful, natural rhythm in the tank. When fed consistently, the coral thickens, producing additional skeletal heads that eventually form a branching or lobed colony.
Its glowing eye-like centers and smooth texture produce a unique aesthetic rarely matched by other LPS corals — especially under blue-spectrum lighting.
Great For
Reef keepers seeking a high-aesthetic, motion-rich, premium LPS coral that provides both glow and gentle movement in the aquarium.
