Sand White Starfish – Includes Pack
Sand Whie Starfish – Sand-Sifting Sea Star
The Sand White Starfish is a peaceful, sand-dwelling sea star valued for its ability to keep the aquarium substrate clean and naturally turned over. Featuring a smooth, pale white to cream-colored body with subtle beige patterning along its arms, this starfish brings both function and gentle movement to reef and fish-only systems.
Sand White Starfish spend most of their time burrowed beneath the sandbed, emerging to feed or move across the tank. While out, their elongated arms and soft coloration create a natural, minimalist look that blends beautifully with reef aquascapes.
Behavior & Function:
This species is known as a sand-sifting starfish, meaning it consumes small organisms, leftover food, detritus, and organics within the sandbed. As it moves, it naturally aerates the substrate and helps prevent compaction, contributing to improved overall tank health.
Because these starfish feed primarily on organisms within the sand, a mature, well-established aquarium with a deep sandbed is required for long-term success.
Care & Requirements:
Tank Maturity: Established system required (6+ months minimum)
Sandbed: Deep, fine substrate recommended
Diet: Natural microfauna, detritus, leftover food; may accept small, meaty foods
Acclimation: Slow drip acclimation is essential
Water Quality: Sensitive to sudden parameter changes
Medications: Cannot tolerate copper
Compatibility: Peaceful; keep away from aggressive fish such as puffers and triggers
Provide plenty of open sand area and avoid keeping in tanks without a stable, healthy substrate.
Supplemental Feeding:
Although Sand White Starfish feed primarily from the sandbed, they may benefit from occasional small portions of minced clam, shrimp, fish, or sinking meaty pellets, especially in lower-nutrient or newer systems.
Important Care:
Avoid rapid changes in salinity or temperature
Do not expose to air during transfer
Not suitable for nano tanks or bare-bottom aquariums
Requires stable water chemistry for survival
Great For:
Mature reef aquariums with deep sandbeds
Peaceful fish or community systems
Reef keepers seeking natural sand cleaning and aeration
Tanks with established microfauna populations
