Neon Green Hairy Mushroom – Live Aquaculture Soft Coral | coralSLover®

Classification: Beginner-Friendly Soft Coral (Rhodactis indosinensis)
Type: Mushroom Coral (Corallimorph) | Aquacultured | Single Polyp (1")

The Neon Green Hairy Mushroom is a striking and resilient soft coral known for its vivid fluorescent green color and distinctive hair-like tentacles. Each polyp is covered with hundreds of delicate extensions that shimmer under actinic or blue LED lighting, creating a mesmerizing, flowing effect. Fully grown specimens can reach up to 4 inches in diameter, forming lush, living mats that add texture and motion to your reef aquarium.

This coral grows densely and reproduces readily by fission, spreading naturally across live rock to form bright colonies. It is extremely hardy and well-suited for both new reef keepers and experienced aquarists. A perfect addition to the lower or mid-sections of a reef tank, the Neon Green Hairy Mushroom provides both vibrant color and biological balance to your marine environment.

Scientific Information:

  • Genus:Rhodactis (Family: Discosomatidae)

  • Common Names: Hairy Mushroom, Elephant Ear Mushroom, Green Rhodactis

  • Coloration: Neon to bright green under actinic or blue LED light

  • Growth Form: Solitary polyps that form cohesive mats or carpets

  • Symbiosis: Contains zooxanthellae (Symbiodiniaceae) for photosynthesis

  • Propagation: Reproduces asexually through fission, forming new polyps from existing tissue

Growth Behavior:
Once settled, this species expands rapidly, covering rock surfaces and forming large, continuous colonies. It’s well-known for its ability to thrive in varied water conditions and lighting setups, making it one of the easiest and most rewarding soft corals for reef aquariums.

Scientific Background: Type – Mushroom Coral (Corallimorphs)

Mushroom corals, or Corallimorphs, belong to the order Corallimorpharia and are close relatives of stony reef-building corals. However, they lack a hard calcium carbonate skeleton, giving them their characteristic soft, fleshy form. This flexibility allows them to attach to uneven rock surfaces and adapt easily to different lighting and flow environments.

Biological Characteristics:

  • Structure: Composed of a flattened oral disc with a central mouth, surrounded by tentacles. In Rhodactis, these tentacles are branched and elongated, creating a “hairy” appearance.

  • Symbiosis: Hosts symbiotic zooxanthellae, which provide nutrients through photosynthesis.

  • Feeding: While largely autotrophic, Mushroom Corals absorb dissolved organic compounds and may capture small particles.

  • Reproduction: Asexual propagation by fission or pedal laceration, allowing them to multiply quickly.

  • Behavior: Lacks strong nematocysts (stinging cells), making them peaceful and suitable for mixed reef tanks.

Ecological and Aesthetic Role:
In natural reefs, Corallimorphs colonize shaded crevices and lagoonal areas, contributing to habitat diversity and aiding substrate stabilization. In aquaria, they act as both visual highlights and biological filters, supporting healthy nutrient cycling. Their fluorescent proteins reflect blue and ultraviolet wavelengths, producing their vibrant glow and making them prized additions for visually balanced reef layouts.

Available Size:

  • Frag (Single Mushroom)

Great For: Beginners and reef keepers seeking a durable, fast-growing coral that thrives in a variety of tank environments.

Mushroom Corals – Hardy Beauties for Every Reef Tank

Mushroom Corals are some of the most versatile and beginner-friendly corals in the reef-keeping hobby. Known for their wide, colorful discs and unique textures, these corals can attach to rockwork, spread across surfaces, or even form small colonies, creating a natural, living carpet in your aquarium. Popular types include Ricordea, Discosoma, Rhodactis, and other mushroom varieties, each offering eye-catching colors and patterns that range from neon greens and blues to reds, pinks, and multi-colored designs.

These corals are incredibly hardy, making them ideal for beginners but also enjoyable for experienced reef keepers. Mushroom Corals are adaptable to a variety of aquarium conditions and can thrive under low to moderate lighting and gentle to medium water flow. They gain much of their energy from photosynthesis via their symbiotic algae (zooxanthellae) but also respond well to supplemental feeding, which can enhance growth, size, and coloration.

Mushrooms are also known for their dynamic personalities—some will expand and contract with the water flow, some will “crawl” slowly across surfaces, and others will display vivid, changing colors under actinic lighting. Their compact size and flexible growth patterns make them perfect for nano aquariums, reef tanks, and mixed coral displays.

At coralSLover®, we proudly offer a curated selection of aquacultured Mushroom Corals, sustainably grown to ensure healthy, vibrant specimens that adapt seamlessly to home reef systems. Whether you’re starting your first reef or adding texture and color to a mature tank, Mushroom Corals bring movement, personality, and lasting beauty to your underwater world.

Care at a Glance – Mushroom Corals

Lighting: Low to moderate lighting is ideal. Mushrooms often display their best colors under lower light conditions and can bleach if exposed to intense lighting too quickly. Gradual acclimation is recommended.

Flow: Low to moderate, indirect flow keeps the surface clean without lifting or damaging the soft tissue. Too much flow can cause mushrooms to detach and drift.

Placement: Best placed on lower rockwork or the substrate, away from high-flow zones. They can spread across rocks over time, making them excellent for filling in open spaces.

Water Quality: Stable, clean water with moderate nutrient levels promotes healthy growth. Mushrooms are generally hardy and tolerant but still benefit from stable parameters.

Feeding: Primarily photosynthetic, though occasional feeding of fine particulate or dissolved foods can boost growth and coloration.

Difficulty: Very beginner friendly — among the hardiest corals, ideal for new reef keepers or low-maintenance systems.

Sustainability: Aquacultured — responsibly grown for long-term aquarium success.
