Velvet Horn Live Aquaculture SPS Coral
Velvet Horn Coral
Scientific Name: Hydnophora sp.
Classification: Regular Hardy SPS Coral
Type: Small Polyp Stony (SPS) Coral
Origin: coralSLover® | Aquacultured
Status: Regular Availability (Limited Stock)
The Velvet Horn SPS Coral features an exceptionally vibrant neon green base, accented by a rich blend of purple and deep green polyps that shift in appearance depending on lighting spectrum and intensity. The contrasting colors create a glowing, velvety surface appearance that stands out prominently in SPS-dominant aquariums.
This coral is commonly referred to as Knob Coral, Velvet Horn Coral, or Branch Coral, and is recognized for its distinctive surface texture and dynamic growth pattern. While primarily encrusting, the colony may also develop horn-shaped skeletal projections that extend outward, giving this coral its characteristic “horned” profile.
The soft, inflated look of the tissue is due to the ability of Hydnophora to swell its polyps, creating a textured, fuzzy appearance. These raised features and structural ridges give the coral a dimensional look and allow it to stand out even when placed among other high-contrast SPS species.
In moderate to high flow, the Velvet Horn Coral demonstrates steady growth—encrusting rock surfaces and expanding outward to form unique, sculptural shapes. Under blue-biased or high-PAR lighting, its neon green base remains vivid, while purple and deeper green polyp tones become more pronounced.
Because Hydnophora can extend defensive tissue to protect itself, it is best placed with adequate spacing from nearby corals. When positioned well, it becomes a bold focal piece offering dramatic shape, color, and motion.
Scientific Notes
Zooxanthellate SPS coral; energy gained from both photosynthesis and planktonic capture.
Primarily encrusting but capable of forming upright skeletal horns.
Possesses potent defensive tissue and may compete aggressively with nearby corals.
Great For
• SPS-focused systems
• Reefers seeking a hardy encrusting coral with horn-shape growth potential
• Displays needing intense neon-green coloration and strong visual texture
• Intermediate to advanced keepers comfortable maintaining stable parameters
Free shipping when qualified.

Lighting: Moderate to moderately high lighting brings out vibrant coloration and supports steady growth. Many LPS prefer indirect or slightly shaded areas to avoid tissue stress.
Flow: Moderate, indirect water movement is ideal. Gentle but consistent flow keeps polyps clean and extended without damaging their fleshy tissue.
Placement: Mid to lower rockwork or sandbed is often best. Allow ample space between colonies, as many LPS have long sweeper tentacles and can sting neighbors.
Water Quality: Stable parameters are key — maintain balanced alkalinity, calcium, and magnesium levels with low to moderate nutrients. Sudden changes can stress fleshy polyps.
Feeding: LPS benefit from targeted or occasional broadcast feeding of meaty or particulate foods to support faster growth and vibrant coloration.
Difficulty: Beginner to intermediate friendly — many LPS are hardy but appreciate consistent conditions and occasional feeding for best results.
Sustainability: Fully aquacultured, zero wild collection — responsibly grown and well adapted to aquarium life.
